The city of Monterey removed the cross erected mysteriously at Del Monte Beach over Easter weekend.

City Manager Mike McCarthy said the cross violates the state constitution.

“We looked at (it) this morning (and) we determined again that it is appropriate not to allow a cross on city property,” he said Tuesday afternoon.

McCarthy said the constitution’s no preference clause clearly states government cannot show preference to any one religion, and that is why workers were sent out to remove the cross.

The cross was removed at 10 a.m. after city crews found it leaning.

“It was, like, super fast,” Sandra Campbell said about the removal.

Campbell was out on the recreation trail Tuesday afternoon hoping to see the new cross for the first time.
