Abundant number of sea otter pups in Elkhorn Slough

Tour boats like the Elkhorn Slough Safari that run out of the Moss Landing Harbor are seeing a spike in the number of sea otter pups in the area.

According to Monterey Bay Aquarium researchers, there are currently 12 otter pups in Elkhorn Slough, which is on the high end of averages for pups this time of year.

The cuddly otter pups can be spotted up and down the 7-mile stretch of slough.

Varying in age, many of the pups are just learning how to swim, staying close to mom, and nursing.

“Who doesn’t love otter puppies?” Elkhorn Slough Safari captain Giancarlo Thomae said. “People are stoked.”

Aquarium researchers are not sure why there are so many pups, but said it could have something to do with tidal patterns.
