Clint Eastwood was a shy middle class child who had many rich friends. He was always talented in sports and music though he didn’t join any school teams or groups. He was approached to become part of the school basketball team because of his height and physical fitness but he was more interested in golf and tennis. Eastwood was born in San Francisco but moved up and down the west coast with his parents since his father was a steelworker. He attended Oakland Technical High School and had intentions on attending Seattle University to major in music but he was drafted into the army during the Korean War. Eastwood’s first part was in a minor role as lab technician in the film Revenge of the Creature (1955), the sequel to Creature from the Black Lagoon. He had a bumpy ride as a first time actor as he was turned down for many roles and made little money. He became discouraged after shooting the film Ambush at Cimarron Pass in 1958, even though it was his biggest part yet, and contemplated leaving his acting career behind altogether. He claimed that this was his lowest point in his acting career and that the movie was the “lousiest Western ever made”. I’m sure I can speak for many people when I state that I’m glad Eastwood did not give up his career in 1958. Imagine what a gem the film industry would have lost. Eastwood decided to give it another shot and signed on with his new agent Bill Shiffrin. Shiffrin suggested Eastwood audition at CBS for a one-hour-long TV show. An executive for the show Rawhide spotted Clint in the canteen of the studio. The executive asked Eastwood how tall he is and he replied that he is 6’4″. Clint was then invited to a screen test and ended up landing the role of Rowdy Yates, beating actor Bing Russell (Kurt Russell’s father). He was on the TV show Rawhide from 1959-1964. Eastwood was offered the lead in Sergio Leone’s A Fistful of Dollars in 1964 as Joe “The Man with No Name”. Actor Richard Harrison was one of the actors considered for this role but he instead suggested producers look at Eastwood for the part. Harrison said, “Maybe my greatest contribution to cinema was not doing Fistful of Dollars, and recommending Clint for the part”. This film was a hit in the U.S. and Europe and was the spark that ignited Eastwood’s film career. He would go on to win numerous awards for his acting including Best Actor in 2008 from the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures for his work in Grand Torino. Clint Eastwood has starred in 59 movies throughout his career, 31 of which he directed. Play Misty for Me (1971) was the first film directed by Clint Eastwood. He also played the part of Dave Garver in this movie, a radio D.J. who is stalked by a crazed female fan. It is said that this film set the stage for future female stalker films like Fatal Attraction. Eastwood has made many contributions to film with his superior directing and won numerous awards for directing Million Dollar Baby, Mystic River and Unforgiven. At age 74, Eastwood became the oldest person to win the Academy Award for Best Director. Eastwood has earned his share of Lifetime Achievement Awards as well as honorary degrees from Universities. He was the first recipient for the Jack Valenti Humanitarian Award for sending society a positive message with the films Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima both released in 2006. He received the Legion d’honneur in 2007, a high honor in France where the president deemed him “the best of Hollywood”. Japan also hailed Eastwood’s achievements, giving him the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon in April 2009. Clint Eastwood’s list of awards goes on for miles, but the one thing that stands out the most to me is the fact that Clint Eastwood has followed his dreams to the fullest. He didn’t give up on acting when things were difficult and he went on to become a producer, writer and director. The most admirable part of all his accomplishments is the fact that Eastwood always had a passion for music but was always so busy with his acting and directing that singing and touring with other musicians was placed on the back burner. Eastwood would eventually attend Berklee College of Music and receive his honorary Doctor of Music degree in 2007 when he was 77 years old.

Carmel, California, has proven to be an irresistible attraction to visitors from around the world drawn here by its storybook architecture and picture-perfect setting. Maybe it’s all the press Carmel used to get when its most famous resident – actor Clint Eastwood – was the hands-on local mayor. Or maybe it’s the gorgeous white sand beach that’s said to be the best on the Monterey Peninsula. Then again, it could just be all of those storybook cottages – the ones with names instead of street addresses – that make Carmel seem like a storybook village just beckoning travelers to visit. Judging from our recent visit, the appeal of Carmel is all of the above plus a good dose of California history and an excellent selection of top-notch resorts, hotels and tourist attractions either in Carmel or within a few miles. The village itself is located on a gradual slope down to the beach, the trees in this area thick and hearty and adding just a little of that Hansel-and-Gretel forest feel to go with the storybook cottages. This is no ordinary downtown, mind you – there are subtle differences. For example, there are no street addresses or neon signs. A local realtor points out it requires a permit to wear high heels. And it was once illegal to eat ice cream on the street, although Clint Eastwood’s administration made our kid’s day by repealing that ordinance. Yet, if you have a canine, you might think the local laws are dog-gone permissive. Dogs are allowed to walk the streets downtown – as long as they have a leash and presumably an owner – and they’re free to roam without a leash on Carmel’s beach. Somewhere around 50 inns and 60 restaurants are located in a downtown area that is a trove of quaint shops, boutiques, jewelry stores and more than 90 galleries. It’s all easily accessible on foot although climbing back up the gradual grade from the beach will make you feel like you’ve had your exercise for the day. After a few hours spent exploring the Carmel shops, we checked into our hotel – in this case a resort in Carmel Valley, just a few miles east of Carmel-by-the-sea. The Quail Lodge is a renowned golf resort that now has become a popular destination for families whether they golf or not. The resort offers a complete set of options for the traveler that allows you to be as active – or low-key – as you want to be. We were struck at how picturesque the resort fairways were as we drove the meandering road that leads through the golf course into the main resort. This part of the Carmel Valley was once a dairy farm, owned by the brother-in-law of Charles Lindbergh. In 1959, a group of investors bought the dairy and began putting together the Carmel Valley Golf and Country Club – Carmel Valley’s first golf course, opening in 1964. Family home sites came next and, in 1967, the hotel opened. Today, Quail Lodge has grown to 850 acres, 97 guestrooms and suites and two excellent restaurants. Within just the past two years, Quail Lodge has undergone a $25 million renovation that has updated the interiors of most of the resort’s accommodations to include such design elements as skylights, built-in window seats that look out onto gardens, and overstuffed cushions and upholstery. In our garden suite, we enjoyed the unique addition of a wide plasma television mounted above the fireplace – one of two flat-screen TV’s in the unit. The spacious bathrooms have all been updated with marble baths, deep soaking tubs and shower stalls. Part of the renovation at Quail Lodge included the opening of a new restaurant, Edgar’s, offering “California Eclectic” cuisine. Intended for more casual dining, Edgar’s offers a gourmet menu in a sportswear setting – and we thoroughly enjoyed our specially prepared selections of steak and seafood. Even higher rated is the other restaurant at Quail Lodge: The Covey. This restaurant is considered one of the best in the area and earned the national DiRoNa Award in both 2004 and 2005. Both dining venues are overseen by Executive Chef Cal Stamenov, who is known for using local produce and seafoods as well as artisan farmed meats. For example, Chef Cal is on such good terms with the local chicken farmers that he can even designate what he wants his poultry fed. While we didn’t have time to indulge, Quail Lodge also has a comprehensive selection of spa and fitness services. There is plenty of room for complete workouts in the well-equipped fitness center. Personal trainers are available and classes are offered in yoga, Pilates-based matwork, meditation, nutrition and other subjects. The Spa offers three outdoor treatment rooms to make a total of seven rooms. An outdoor Jacuzzi, steam rooms, manicures, pedicures and hydrotherapy are all available. We did make the time to see some of the Carmel-area sights, including the beach and the 17-Mile Drive through Pebble Beach, where we stopped at the Lodge at Pebble Beach for some shopping and a light meal. It was amazing to see the Pebble Beach golf course up-close and one could sense the thrill it must give a golfer to play the famous course. But we’re told playing Pebble Beach is not something you do every day – unless you’re a tycoon – as it’s one of the most expensive golf courses anywhere. Another must-see in Carmel is the Carmel Mission, which stands today as a monument to Padre Junipero Serra of the Order of Franciscan Friars. After founding missions in San Diego and Monterey, Serra founded the Carmel Mission on August 24, 1771. Don’t forget that Carmel is adjacent to Monterey – going to prove there really is a lot to see and do in the area – and it’s easy to stop by that historic waterfront and soak up some California history while in the area. Cannery Row – the subject of John Steinbeck’s book by that name — still has a bit of that fish factory feel to it, and there are still a few run-down or torn-down buildings that mar what otherwise might be picture-perfect views. But the city has made a lot of effort to create bike paths and walking areas to accommodate the legions of visitors. And there are plenty of reasons to take a walk — the area now is home to more than 200 galleries in addition to a street-full of specialty shops, restaurants, hotels and inns. The Cannery Row coastline is also a natural habitat for many sea creatures that kayakers paddle out to see. The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is a 5,300-square-mile area that protects species such as seals, sea otters, shorebirds and many others that are endangered. The Monterey Bay Aquarium, housed in one of the cannery buildings, is a fascinating exploration of the undersea life found near Monterey. The aquarium covers everything from tide pool creatures to sharks and even features a 31-foot high kelp forest that is visible in one of the aquarium’s huge tanks. Two-story viewing windows give visitors the feeling they are truly 20,000 leagues under the sea. Yes, Carmel-by-the-sea is aptly named – the sea will be a big part of this vacation experience, but that’s only part of the attraction for visitors. AT A GLANCE WHERE: Carmel-by-the-sea is just south of Monterey, about 120 miles south of San Francisco and 350 miles north of Los Angeles. WHAT: A quaint, seaside “storybook village” with charming accommodations and many tourist attractions in the area. WHEN: Any time of year. It’s definitely cooler in winter, but also less crowded. WHY: The charming combination of shops, restaurants and storybook cottages makes this an unusual destination, even for California. HOW: For more information on Carmel, contact the Carmel Chamber of Commerce at 1-800-550-4333 for a free visitor’s guide, or visit www.carmelcalifornia.org. For more information on the Quail Lodge, please call 888-828-8787 or visit www.quaillodge.com.

Clint Eastwood was born in San Francisco with an English, Scottish and Dutch ancestry. He began his career with some B-grade films such as Francis in the Navy, and Revenge of the Creature. The world knows him as an icon, and a living legend who started his career as an actor but later on reached great heights of popularity and sweet success. He appeared for the first time as a star in a feature film called Ambush at Cimmaron Park.

In 1959, he became a household name with the television series Rawhide. With the release of the film The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, where Eastwood played the role of a hunter, he actually came up with a new image. By this time, people had already started recognizing him as an international star though still with the same tough look.

In the year, 1971, Siegel came up with his production Company, Malpaso. This incident became a turning point in the life of Eastwood. The first ever movie where the audience saw their superstar in the most promising role was Dirty Harry, which also became a huge box office hit and was also critically acclaimed. The thriller Play Misty for Me, which was released in 1971, also gave him a chance to show off his talents and mesmerize the audience with his directorial abilities while starring in the same film too. High Plains Drifter and Outlaw Josey Wales are the two allegorical Westerns by Eastwood. His collaboration with Siegel ended with the movie Escape from Alcatraz.

The decade of the 1980s did not witness much of Clint Eastwood though Pale Rider in 1985 paid homage to the Western Film Classic and became a part of the Cannes Film Festival.

After 1990, people once again witnessed the most promising and critically acclaimed box office hit, Unforgiven. The movie had other stalwarts like Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman and Richard Harris. It was a landmark in Clint Eastwood’s career, which bagged him the Oscar for Best Director and Best Picture. The film was nominated for 9 Oscars.

In 2000, Clint Eastwood worked in films like Blood Work and directed some all-time hits like Mystic River, Flags of Our Father and Letter from Iwo and Jima.

His originality and uniqueness can also be garnered from the fact that he is the only one who has been nominated for both Best Actor and Best Director for the same film (Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby). Clint Eastwood won the Golden Globe award for Best Director Motion Picture in 1989 for Bird and Academy award for Unforgiven (Best Director) in 1992. In the history of Hollywood along with Francis Ford Coppola and Milos Forman, Eastwood also directed two Best Picture winners.

In 2007, Eastwood became the first recipient of the Jack Humanitarian award. Apart from the Academy and Golden Globe awards, he has also achieved Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement award in 2003 as well as the Hank award by the Henri Mancini Institute. With a career spanning four decades, he has touched all the forms of filmmaking. Clint Eastwood is the ultimate Cowboy hero who actually reinvented the form in his own unique style. An amazing actor, he even tried his hands in direction with some remarkable movies like Play Misty for Me, The Outlaw Josey Wales and Unforgiven. Evolving from an actor to a producer in his most prolific and versatile way was Clint Eastwood.

Clint Eastwood has starred in about 25 films, appeared in 57, directed 25 and produced 20. He is not only an icon and a living legend but also an institution by himself. It seems that there is no end to the creativity of this tight-lipped and low-key person. Currently he is busy directing The Changeling, a period thriller by Universal Pictures expected to release in 2008.
